E-business environment
The 2005 e-readiness rankings Conclusions - A white paper from the Economist Intelligence Unit
According to the publishers, a country's "e-readiness" is essentially a measure of its e-business
environment, a collection of factors that indicate how amenable a market is to Internet-based
opportunities.
Gradual market liberalisation in Eastern Europe has transformed the telecoms and IT sectors. As
monopolies are privatised and competition is let in, services have improved and prices have fallen.
The region is leveraging its geographic and cultural proximity to Western Europe to create
niches in software development, high-tech manufacturing and outsourcing
services that cater to Western European businesses. Best practices in e-government are
also starting to filter in. Romania's e-government portal recently received an achievement
award from the World Summit of the Information Society.
